Description
Dear Editor: Current drug prevention and treatment strategies, including the widespread Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, rely on techniques developed primarily for males. These interventions assume that sufficient similarities exist between the genders to justify the use of a male treatment model (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 1995). However, recent research on substance abuse and delinquency prevention and treatment has suggested that the genders may, in fact, differ across several dimensions that are important for the successfulness of the program (Covington, 2001). Therefore, a gender-sensitive program is necessary.
